Essentials of Surgery - Flap Management and Suturing 101 Workshops

Adopting a blended-learning format, participants were taught the basics of suturing and flap design for use in a variety of clinical scenarios.

ACP Office – Education organised a workshop on 9 December 2020 for nine residents in the Periodontology Residency Training Programme, and on 6 February 2021 for 10 Endodontic Registrars, Associate Consultants and Consultants, to teach the basics of suturing and simple and complex techniques of flap design.

The workshops – which consists of an online module and a practical session using pig-jaws – were taught by Cl A/Prof Marianne Ong and Dr Chee Hoe Kit, Senior Consultant, and Dr Lee Wan Zhen, Consultant, Department of Restorative Dentistry, Periodontic Unit.

Flaps are used during surgery to provide clinicians with a clear visual, and to gain access to the operating site. The type of flap and its design is crucial as it alleviates trauma to the patients' soft tissue during the surgical procedure. This results in less post-operative pain and swelling, and a lower risk of complication such as infection or delayed healing.
