Dr Chee Hoe Kit, Senior Consultant, Periodontics Unit, Department of Restorative Dentistry – NDCS was invited to appear in the “Hello Singapore” programme on Mediacorp Channel 8 where he spoke on a published research study that analysed the relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes.
The study found that diabetes patients are more susceptible to periodontal disease because of poor blood sugar control, prolonged high levels of blood sugar, and an altered immune response which together causes a condition of greater inflammation of the gums when the gum is infected with bacteria.
Dr Chee also highlighted the mild form of gum disease gingivitis can worsen into periodontitis if not treated promptly. Symptoms of periodontitis include frequent bleeding while brushing teeth, swollen gums, presence of pus when gums are pressed, pain while biting, loose teeth, and widening gaps between teeth.
