Bridging the Gap Between Clinic and Home

The Oral Care Coach (OCC) is a mobile application developed by the NDCS research team to deliver personalised oral hygiene instructions for individuals with periodontitis. Periodontitis affects nearly 50% of the global adult population and 23% of adults in Singapore with severe forms of the disease. While treatment involves regular professional debridement, long-term outcomes depend critically on patient compliance with daily oral hygiene — an area where current care models fall short.

Standard practice typically consists of a one-off verbal instruction during the clinic visit, supplemented by generic brochures. The OCC app addresses these shortcomings by providing continuous reinforcement outside the clinic, delivering personalised, anatomy-specific guidance, and offering behavioural support designed to improve daily compliance with preventive oral-care routines.
